The Course

On the sandy loam south of Melbourne, bunkers are cut so sharply into the green edges that recovery becomes an art form.

Alister MacKenzie routed the West Course at Royal Melbourne in the late 1920s, and along with the earlier East Course it forms the two halves from which the club assembles the Composite Course for major championship play, widely considered the strongest test of golf in the southern hemisphere. The bunkering is the club’s signature, ragged, deep, and set so close to the putting surfaces that a shot missing by a few feet can face a recovery entirely out of proportion to the size of the error.

The turf is firm nearly year round, a product of the sandy soil that gives the whole Melbourne Sandbelt its character, and it rewards a ground game that many golfers rarely get to practice at home. Fairway lines are frequently optional in the best sense: several holes offer more than one reasonable route from tee to green, and the smartest path is not always the most obvious one.

Royal Melbourne sits inside a neighborhood of Sandbelt clubs, Kingston Heath, Victoria, Metropolitan, and Commonwealth among them, that together form the densest concentration of world-class golf anywhere in the southern hemisphere. A visit built around Royal Melbourne alone undersells the region; most serious golfers who make the trip play three or four Sandbelt courses across a week.

Access to Royal Melbourne is by invitation or through arranged introductions, and the club is protective of its member experience. The Australian spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and the turf firmest, are generally regarded as the strongest windows to visit.
