Royal County Down
Newcastle, Northern Ireland
Links golf at its most beautiful and least forgiving.

The Course
Beneath the peak of Slieve Donard, where the Mountains of Mourne meet Dundrum Bay, the course plays through dunes bearded with gorse and heather.
Royal County Down occupies a stretch of linksland that would be extraordinary even without a single hole cut into it, and the design leans into that inheritance rather than fighting it. Blind tee shots are a signature rather than a flaw, asking golfers to trust a line they cannot fully see and to remember it on the next visit. Bunkers here are edged in wild native grasses and cut deep enough that recovery is rarely automatic, which keeps every round honest regardless of a player’s handicap.
The backdrop does more work than most golf courses ask of a view. Slieve Donard, the highest of the Mourne Mountains, rises directly behind several holes, and the town of Newcastle and Dundrum Bay complete a setting that has led a long list of well-traveled golfers to simply call this the finest course they have played, without much hedging. Photographs flatten it into a postcard, and walking it restores the scale.
The course has hosted the Irish Open and is a candidate venue for a future Open Championship, a recognition that has been building in the golf world’s private conversations for years even as wider fame arrived slowly. That relative quiet, for now, is part of what makes a round here feel discovered rather than merely visited.
Newcastle sits an hour or so from Belfast, close enough for a focused visit and far enough to feel like a proper departure. The linksland season runs firm and fast through the summer months, when the gorse is in bloom and the wind, rarely absent, is at its most forgiving.
How JULY Golf Arranges It
What we take off your hands.
We arrange tee times, caddies who can read the blind shots correctly the first time, and a Northern Ireland itinerary that can extend to the Antrim coast and Belfast for travelers who want more than a single round. Transport from Belfast and lodging in Newcastle are handled as part of the same plan.
